Actor Kamal Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking permission to release his upcoming film Thug Life in the state on June 5, amid growing controversy over his recent remarks on the Kannada language.
The move follows the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) imposing a ban on the film’s release, demanding a public apology from Haasan after he allegedly stated that Kannada is derived from Tamil—a comment that sparked outrage among Kannada groups and pro-Kannada activists.
Haasan filed the petition through Rajkamal Film International, requesting the court to restrain state authorities, including the police and KFCC, from obstructing the movie’s screening. He also urged the court to direct officials to provide adequate security for the film’s release.
In response to the controversy, KFCC President Narasimhulu said the chamber had given Haasan a 24-hour ultimatum to apologise. Failure to do so, he said, would lead to a complete ban on the movie’s screening across theatres in Karnataka.
“As per the demand of pro-Kannada organisations and a letter from the Karnataka government, we have asked Kamal Haasan to apologise. If he doesn’t, his movie will not be allowed to release in Karnataka,” said Narasimhulu.
KFCC member and activist Sa Ra Govindu echoed the sentiment, calling the matter resolvable with a simple apology. “Kannadigas have supported Haasan throughout his film career. A heartfelt apology will be accepted warmly,” he added.
However, Haasan has remained firm on his stance. Responding to the uproar, the actor defended his remarks, stating: “This is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. If I am wrong, I will apologise. If not, I won’t.”
He also affirmed his affection for Karnataka and neighboring states, claiming the backlash is being driven by those with “an agenda.”
Thug Life, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, features Kamal Haasan alongside Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles. The film has garnered significant attention, but its release in Karnataka now hinges on the court’s ruling—or an apology from the veteran actor.
